A beautiful large handmade Moroccan wool rug combining a warm natural ivory background with a playful composition of colorful geometric motifs.

The design is particularly distinctive: elongated vertical sequences of diamonds and abstract forms appear to float across the upper field, while the lower section develops into a denser rhythmic arrangement of small multicolored diamonds. The contrast between these two areas gives the rug an expressive, almost illustrative quality while preserving the spontaneity characteristic of handwoven Amazigh textiles.

Design & Composition

The rug is structured around vertical sequences of geometric motifs, primarily diamonds, triangles and elongated abstract forms.

Some motifs are completely filled with color while others appear only as outlines, creating an appealing alternation between solid and open shapes. Their irregular heights, spacing and combinations give each vertical sequence its own personality.

The lower portion changes rhythm dramatically. Here, rows of smaller multicolored diamonds form a denser decorative field before reaching the hand-finished fringe.

This transition from open asymmetrical composition to repeating geometry is one of the most interesting aspects of the rug.

Amazigh-Inspired Geometry

Diamond, triangular and lozenge-shaped forms have a long history within Amazigh weaving traditions. Rather than treating every individual motif as having one universal fixed translation, this rug is best understood as a contemporary artisan composition built from that broader geometric vocabulary.

The subtle irregularities are especially important. Lines are not mechanically perfect, colors shift slightly and individual shapes vary from one another — visible evidence that the design developed by hand on the loom rather than through industrial reproduction.

Texture

The close-up reveals a dense and tactile wool pile with beautiful variations in height and direction.

The colored motifs are woven directly into the rug, creating subtle differences in relief between the natural ivory background and the geometric forms. This gives the piece considerably more depth and character in person than a flat printed pattern.
