Introduction
At Kenza & Co, we work directly with Berber women artisans in Morocco to bring authentic handmade rugs to homes around the world. With no intermediaries and a deep respect for traditional craftsmanship, each rug is carefully selected for its quality and story.
In this FAQ, you’ll find answers about authenticity, materials, shipping, care, sizing, and custom Moroccan rugs.
Authenticity & Origin
Learn about the origin of our rugs and how we ensure authenticity.
Are your Moroccan rugs authentic?
Yes. All our rugs are authentic handmade Moroccan rugs sourced directly from our own artisan cooperative and trusted partner cooperatives in Morocco. Each piece is handwoven using traditional Amazigh knotting techniques on authentic looms, following methods preserved for decades, using 100% natural local sheep wool and eco‑friendly processes. We do not sell factory‑made rugs or mass‑produced pieces. Each rug reflects traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations.
Are your rugs handmade?
Yes. Every Kenza & Co rug is handwoven on traditional wooden looms using ancestral Berber techniques. No machines are involved in the weaving process.
Are your rugs one of a kind?
Yes. Most of our rugs are unique pieces. Due to the handmade nature of Berber weaving, each rug has its own character and cannot be exactly reproduced.
Where are your rugs made?
Our rugs are woven in different regions of Morocco, particularly in the Atlas Mountains, where Berber weaving traditions have existed for centuries. We work directly with artisan cooperatives to ensure authenticity and fair craftsmanship.
Materials & Craftsmanship
Discover the natural materials and traditional weaving techniques behind our rugs.
What materials are used in Kenza & Co rugs?
Our rugs are made primarily from 100% natural sheep wool sourced locally in Morocco. Some vintage rugs may include cotton foundations. We do not use synthetic fibers, allowing the rugs to remain breathable, durable and environmentally friendly.
Is the wool natural and eco‑friendly?
Yes. We use natural wool from local sheep, often hand‑spun by artisans. The wool keeps its natural lanolin, which helps protect the fibers, making the rugs naturally resistant and long‑lasting without chemical treatments.
Why do handmade Moroccan rugs have small variations?
Because they are truly handmade. Slight variations in shape, pattern or color are part of the authenticity and character of Berber rugs. These details are considered a mark of craftsmanship rather than imperfections.
How long does it take to make a handmade Moroccan rug?
Depending on the size and complexity, a handmade rug can take between 3 and 8 weeks to complete. Larger custom rugs may take longer due to the fully manual weaving process.
Are the colors made with natural pigments?
Many of our rugs use natural or traditional pigments derived from minerals and plants, following Amazigh dyeing traditions. These natural tones age beautifully over time and give each rug its distinctive character. Some vintage rugs also show natural patina developed through time, which adds to their authenticity and uniqueness.
Types of Moroccan Rugs
Understand the differences between the main Berber rug styles and the Amazigh tribes behind them.
What are the main types of Moroccan Berber rugs?
The most well‑known Moroccan Berber rugs include Beni Ouarain, Azilal, Boujaad, Beni M’Guild and Boucherouite rugs. Each tribe developed its own weaving style, patterns and color traditions depending on climate, available materials and cultural symbolism.
What is a Beni Ouarain rug?
Beni Ouarain rugs come from tribes in the Middle Atlas Mountains. They are known for their thick natural wool, minimalist geometric patterns and neutral ivory backgrounds. Traditionally used as winter bedding due to their warmth, they are now highly appreciated in modern interiors for their timeless and minimalist aesthetic.
What is an Azilal rug?
Azilal rugs originate from the High Atlas region and are known for their artistic and expressive patterns. They often combine natural wool backgrounds with colorful motifs created using cotton or dyed wool. These rugs often tell personal or symbolic stories from the weaver’s life.
What is a Boujaad rug?
Boujaad rugs come from the Haouz region near Marrakech. They are recognizable for their warm tones such as pink, red, terracotta and orange. These rugs often feature abstract geometric patterns and naturally faded tones that develop a beautiful vintage character over time.
What is a Beni M’Guild rug?
Beni M’Guild rugs come from the Middle Atlas and are traditionally heavier rugs with dense wool and deeper colors such as reds, purples and browns. Many vintage examples show beautiful natural fading due to decades of use, which collectors value highly today.
What is a Boucherouite rug?
Boucherouite rugs are traditionally made from recycled textiles such as cotton, wool and sometimes synthetic fibers. They are known for their vibrant colors and spontaneous artistic compositions. These rugs represent the creativity and resourcefulness of Berber women artisans.
Why do Moroccan rugs look different from each other?
Because each tribe developed its own visual language, materials and techniques. Factors such as altitude, sheep breeds, climate and local traditions influenced the thickness, colors and patterns of each rug style.
Are vintage Moroccan rugs different from newly made rugs?
Yes. Vintage rugs often show natural wear, soft patina and color evolution that occurred over decades. New rugs reflect traditional techniques but with fresh wool and brighter tones. Both are authentic, but collectors often appreciate vintage rugs for their history and character.
Rug Size & Styling Guide
Learn how to choose the right rug size and how to style a Moroccan rug in your living room, bedroom or hallway.
How do I choose the right Moroccan rug size?
The right size depends on the room and furniture layout. In living rooms, the rug should ideally sit under the front legs of the sofa. In bedrooms, rugs are often placed under the bed extending on both sides. For hallways, runner rugs are typically used to define the space.
What rug size is best for a living room?
For most living rooms, large rugs between 250–350 cm help unify the space. A common rule is to place at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug to create a balanced and intentional layout.
What size rug should I choose for a bedroom?
For bedrooms, a large rug placed under the bed creates the most harmonious look. Alternatively, two runners on each side of the bed can also work well, especially in minimalist interiors.
Are Moroccan rugs suitable for modern interiors?
Yes. Moroccan Berber rugs are widely used in Scandinavian, minimalist, wabi‑sabi and contemporary interiors because of their organic textures and timeless geometric patterns.
Can I use a Moroccan rug in high traffic areas?
Yes. Handmade wool rugs are naturally durable and suitable for living rooms, hallways and daily use spaces. Wool fibers naturally resist dirt and recover well from compression.
How do interior designers style Moroccan rugs?
Interior designers often use Moroccan rugs to add warmth and texture to neutral spaces. They are commonly combined with natural materials like wood, linen and stone to create calm and balanced interiors.

Rug Care & Maintenance
Learn how to care for your Moroccan wool rug to preserve its beauty and durability for years.
How do I clean a Moroccan wool rug?
Regular vacuuming with low to medium suction is usually enough to maintain your rug. For small stains, we recommend using cold water and mild natural soap, gently blotting rather than rubbing. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners.
Do handmade wool rugs shed?
Yes. Shedding is normal for handmade wool rugs, especially during the first months of use. This is a natural characteristic of real wool and will decrease over time with regular use and vacuuming.
Are Moroccan rugs durable for everyday use?
Yes. Handmade Moroccan rugs are known for their durability. Natural wool fibers are resilient and elastic, allowing the rug to recover its shape even in high‑traffic areas like living rooms and hallways.
Can Moroccan rugs be used with underfloor heating?
Yes. Wool is a natural temperature regulator and works well with underfloor heating. It helps maintain warmth in winter and remains breathable in warmer seasons.
How can I make my rug last for decades?
We recommend rotating the rug occasionally to ensure even wear, avoiding prolonged direct sunlight exposure, and using a rug pad if needed. With proper care, handmade wool rugs can last for generations.
Do Moroccan rugs improve with age?
Yes. High quality wool rugs often develop a beautiful natural patina over time. The fibers soften and the rug gains character, which is why many vintage Moroccan rugs are highly valued today.
